Acer AOD250-1383 10.1-Inch Ruby Red Netbook - Up to 8 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) Review

Acer AOD250-1383 10.1-Inch Ruby Red Netbook - Up to 8 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter)
I wanted this netbook to take out onto a golf course to do scorekeeping for a large group of golfers using a system I built in Excel . It works very well for that primary purpose with one hesitation about the screen glare and visibility in high light (sun) conditions. I need to find a shady spot for decent visibility but that is no big surprise.

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1008HA-MU17-BU 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) Review

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1008HA-MU17-BU 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter)
I decided to purchase this one because it met and exceeded my requirements for a NETBOOK. The specs on this baby match up better than most. Great keyboard and mouse, keys feel great, wireless n, fast boot, upgradeable from 1GB to 2GB, user friendly ASUS Bios updater interface, Microsoft works, lightweight. You must understand first the context of my statement. I wanted a NETbook. Not a Laptop. I didnt want an “ultimate” or Professional” version of ANYTHING running on this NETbook. I wanted it to be lean and mean. I wanted a small, powerful, convenient AND FAST NETbook for casual surfing and email. If you wanted more, your in the wrong market. I didnt buy this to play games, edit, video, watch TV or DVD’s, etc. Like I said I didn’t want a Laptop. Windows Starter 32 bit is an excellent match for a NETbook. Think of Windows 7 Starter as just that, the place to start. I figured, if I NEED an “anytime upgrade” Ill get it. At this point, having had used it for a week, I’m not changing a thing. Less is more with a NETbook. Ill save upgrades for my LAPtop and DESKtop. From when I push the power button to my first opening click of Firefox = less than one minute. I removed some preloaded crapware, i.e. ASUS whistles and bells and some preloaded games. Added Norton Internet Security Netbook Edition, and bingo, the perfect NETbook.

MSI Wind U100-451US 10-Inch White Netbook - 3 Cell Battery Review

MSI Wind U100-451US 10-Inch White Netbook - 3 Cell Battery
I keep the wind plugged in (the battery does suck) on my reading table and use it to casually surf the internet, check email and occasionally do a bit of work. I took the advice of another review and removed ms office suite and use open office for my word processor, but rarely have need for it anyway. For my purposes it’s perfect. The keyboard is easy to type on, the screen size is small but fine. Don’t expect anything out of the speakers; just use ear buds. I would not only recommended this product to a friend but wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to buy another one tomorrow for myself if mine was lost or broken.
I hope this helps a someone sitting on the fence.

Gateway LT2030u 10.1-Inch Red Netbook - Over 7 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) Review

Gateway LT2030u 10.1-Inch Red Netbook - Over 7 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter)
I have been pleased overall with this Gateway computer. A couple of items though. First, Windows 7 Starter required me to get some new drivers for printers (not the computer’s fault). The battery lasts around 6 hrs of active browsing. It comes preloaded with MS Office Trial Version that you can “unlock” if you pay the fee. I purchased my own Business version and thus had to strip this off before installing mine. I did need tech support for an issue and found out they are only available for a fee so EXPECT NOTHING. Overall I’m pleased with this computer, not its support.

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU27-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 14 Hours of Battery Life) Review

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU27-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 14 Hours of Battery Life)
After doing quite a bit of research, I decided to purchase this Netbook. This is even after highly considering the PU17 which as mentioned earlier comes with a recovery disk but not the nice matte soft touch exterior. The reason this specific model does not come with a recovery disk is because there is one-touch recovery built in which will restore the PC to its original state from files which are located on the hard drive. From my understanding, people better start getting used to this since it seems to be where every manufacturer is going. I also chose to install Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit instead of sticking with the Starter Edition (see ya later bloatware!!!) which runs very very well on only 1GB of RAM. I have the 2GB upgrade coming this week (just make sure you get a RAM with CL=5). The reason I didn’t install 64-bit is because you can’t use more than 2GB of memory and also because I didn’t want to have any driver issues. In the end, it makes very little difference. So far it seems that Win7 Ultimate even runs better and smoother than the Starter version, mostly due to the removal of all the crapware that comes pre-installed.
